Coursing:
Coursing
is long established as part of Irish rural life & pastime. The
Irish Coursing Club was founded in 1916. It has very strict Rules and
guidelines laid down for all Coursing Clubs under its affiliation.
These Rules and guidelines are rigidly enforced by the Irish Coursing
Club's Officials and Control Stewards who attend all coursing meetings.
Coursing may only take place between the end of September and February
inclusive. This is to ensure that the hare is protected during the
breeding season. Clubs may not run more than 72 courses in anyone day.
Clubs must have a minimum of number of hares before running a meeting -
the minimum number being 1 hare for every course to be run plus a
surplus of 10. All hares must be released back to the countryside after
each coursing meeting. The object of a course is to test two greyhounds
against one another, not against the hare. It is not the object of a
course to kill the hare. Muzzling of greyhounds was introduced to
coursing in 1993 and now greyhounds must be muzzled in each round of
all stakes at enclosed coursing meetings. Coursing Clubs take steps to
ensure that the hare is protected from predators and from poachers. The
result of the conservation and preservation policies of the Irish
Coursing Club and Coursing Clubs generally, is that the hare population
is on the increase.
