Saffronhill is a rare and impressive Queen Anne house set in a wonderful elevated position commanding fine views over the surrounding countryside. The delightfully bright and airy 11-bay house has a rich history spanning some 300 years with the original single storey section of the house believed to date from 1708.
Built by Rev. Edward Sayers, curate of Doneraile, the house passed to the Creagh family of the neighbouring Creagh castle before being sold to Viscount Doneraile - whose mother in law is believed to enlarge the house with a rear addition in the 1850s. Saffronhill was abandoned in the 1950s with the originally thatched house being used as a store until it was been rebuilt and restored in recent years.
The house name is believed to refer to crocuses grown here in large quantities for the production of saffron.
The well-proportioned and flexible accommodation affords large rooms and in all extends to over 240 sq m including reception hall, large kitchen/dining room, drawing room, four bedrooms and two bathrooms. There are two good size ground floor rooms in the Victorian addition which would allow further reception rooms. The original house has full height sash windows and 4 m ceilings which give an exceptional light and spacious feel.
The house is tucked away and approached by a long driveway through a wood, which affords maximum privacy. There is a fine stone yard with traditional outbuildings together with a stone guest or staff cottage with two bedrooms and separate access from the drive. The original walled garden is located a short distance away.
