This is a market town north-west of Kanturk set in the area known as Duhallow. Newmarket was founded in the 17th century and John Philpot Curran the famous orator and politician was born here in 1750. He was father of Sarah Curran the friend of Robert Emmet, and she is buried in the local graveyard. The James O'Keeffe Memorial Institute situated in the town may date from about 1725 and shares the same architect as Doneraile Court. The house was built by Sir Richard Aldworth a major land owner in the area.
