Ravensdale Area Description

Ravensdale is located in the Republic of Ireland just south of the Border with Northern Ireland. It forms that part of the Cooley Peninsula which links the peninsula to the mainland, at the northern end of County Louth,, Irelands smallest County.

Although Ravensdale has a Village at its centre it is largely a Rural Community with many residents commuting to Dundalk, 5kms (nearest town south of the border), Newry, 7kms (nearest town north of the Border) and the Irish Capital City of Dublin, 80kms to the south. The name Ravensdale was introduced by the Fortesque Family, who were the Landlords from the early 1700's, eventually aquiring the title Lord Clermont. They resided at Ravensdale Park House, a palatial house overlooking the valley which at one time housed one of the most extensive private librarys in Europe.

Today the name Ravensdale has been extended to include all of that picturesque valley, flanked by the Cooley Mountains to the east and Feede Mountain the the north west. The Valley is alligned North-South gradually widening from its northernmost point at Dromad and stretching southwards to Ballymascanlon and Bellurgan shore on Dundalk Bay.

As such Ravensdale now covers the old Irish Barony of Ballymascanlon, which had Dulargy at its centre (where the local National school and Church are located). It has a diverse and beautiful landscape comprising of mountains, woodlands and meadow pastures dotted by a variety of rural residences large and small.

The Village of Ravensdale, more or less in the centre of the Valley has many fine Victorian residences and one of the oldest surviving houses in Ireland where King William slept before and after the Battle of the Boyne (1690). The landsape is also very rich and diverse in archaeological sites and is home to the Proleek Dolmen (pictured above) which is located on the edge of the Ballymascanlon Hotel Golf Course. Despite 'progress' all four classes of Megalithic tomb (2nd millenium B.C.) have survived to the present day.
