Tinahely Area Description

Tinahely is perhaps most widely known for its popular annual agricultural show which is held the first Monday in August which draws crowds in their hundreds. It is set in the beautiful rolling lands surrounding the Derry River. The ancient Tomnafinogue Woods are the largest standing oak wood in the Ireland which provided the timber needed for the British Navy ships and indeed the roof of Westminster Hall. There is a preservation order to protect the remaining woods not only for their natural beauty but also as they relate to Irish folklore tales of warriors and kings. This property is within walking distance from the woods. Tinahely village itself is unusual in that the Market Square is of triangular shape and serves as the focal point of the village. The Courthouse Arts Centre (originally the courthouse and the market house - now combined) and the local library surround the square. The Courthouse is a formidable building originating from 1843. The current Arts Centre housed within is a delight with arts and cultural events including musical and theatre per-formances, visual arts exhibitions and installations, and arthouse and foreign cinema. Other points of interest within the village include Black Toms cellar which dates from the 1600's and The Old Mill Building. The village offers all necessary services with a Bank Machine, Bank, Post Office, Newsagents and Supermarkets, Hair Salon, Beauty Salon, Barber Shop, three National Schools, GAA Club and some nice cafes and places to eat. The local pub Seavers' offers Traditional Irish Music weekly.
